Will does something he regrets.

EXT. SALEM PLAZA - DAY
WILL stands before MARLENA and SONNY, who are both seated at a coffee table.

WILL
What’s, uh, what’s going on here? Huh?

Marlena takes the opportunity to speak.

MARLENA
Well, sweetheart, Sonny and I just ran into each other. He was filling me in on the success of his fundraiser.

Will disarms himself.

WILL
Oh, yeah! The poetry slam. It was a blast, I heard. I’m sorry I missed it, Sonny.

Sonny nods.

MARLENA
I am, too.
(to Sonny)
How much money did you end up raising, again?

Looking between Marlena and Will, Sonny takes a moment to steel his resolve.

SONNY
Dr. Evans, I’m sorry -- I’m not gonna lie, and I’m not going to ask you to lie on my behalf.
(to Will)
I came here to talk to your grandmother, but not about the fundraiser.

WILL
So, about Ian, then?

SONNY
(shaking his head)
No -- about you.

Will is taken aback.

EXT. SALEM PLAZA
Will laughs.

WILL
You came here to talk to my grandmother -- about me? What did you say to her?

MARLENA
(interjecting)
Sonny didn’t say anything, sweetheart. He was just concerned.

WILL
Oh, he was concerned -- about me, right? Did you tell him anything?

SONNY
(interjecting)
Will, she wouldn’t do that, and I didn’t ask her to. She didn’t betray you, alright? If anyone has, it’s me. I betrayed you.

WILL
What?

MARLENA
No, Sonny, don’t. Will, Sonny was merely concerned for you -- that’s all.

WILL
And he came to you?

SONNY
We weren’t talking behind your back about you. We were talking about me.

Will scoffs.

WILL
Right. Talking about you -- about me.

Marlena stands.

MARLENA
OK, OK, this isn’t helping. Why don’t we just -- take a breather, and revisit this at a later time.

WILL
(shaking his head)
No, grandma, I can’t. I don’t get it. I can’t believe it.

He looms over Sonny.

WILL (CONT’D)
Just what are you trying to do, Sonny? Huh? Going to my grandmother about me? For what?

EXT. SALEM PLAZA
Marlena urges Will back from Sonny.

MARLENA
Sonny has done nothing for you to be upset about. His heart is in the right place.

WILL
His heart -- his heart, huh?

He turns back to Sonny.

WILL (CONT’D)
Whatever happened to letting me race on my own, huh? About me being in control?

Sonny stands.

SONNY
Nothing’s changed. You’re still in control. But with control, comes responsibility. I did this for me. I did this because I think this is becoming bigger than I can handle -- bigger than us both.

EXT. SALEM PLAZA
Will pulls back.

WILL
Us? Us? I don’t know what you’re talking about. There is no “us,” alright? I’m not gay.
(to Marlena)
I’m not gay.

Sonny steps towards Will.

SONNY
Will, don’t -- don’t do this.

Will recoils further.

WILL
(shrugging)
I’m not doing anything. ‘Cause there’s nothing going on.

Marlena moves to speak.

WILL (CONT’D)
(ignoring Marlena)
You know what? You are such a hypocrite.

Sonny flinches, as if whipped, while Marlena watches in horror.

WILL (CONT’D)
You say you wanna help me, let me do things on my own -- and then you pull something like this? You never intended to let me do that, did you? You’re just like everybody else, trying to tell me what I am, and you’re wrong. I’m sick of it. You deny me, and now this? You just wanna control me! Oh, you’re just such the perfect friend, and you know exactly what’s best for me, like you have the slightest clue about me.

He looms in Sonny’s face.

WILL (CONT’D)
I’m only gonna say this once: you -- know -- nothing -- about me. So why don’t you just go and take your fancy metaphors and your holier-than-thou attitude and just -- shove it. Shove it, alright? I think you’re supposed to be good at that. Just take it back, take it away, and leave me the hell alone. You got that? I mean it: just leave me the hell --

MARLENA
Will! Stop it! Stop it right this moment!

Will rapidly deflates at Marlena’s anger.

EXT. SALEM PLAZA
Marlena steps between Will and Sonny.

MARLENA
Can you see what’s happening here? Can you see what’s going on right before you?

WILL
(tremulously)
What? What’s happening?

MARLENA
Your emotions have been bottled up for so long. You have been wound up so tightly, your frustration is getting the better of you. Your emotions are boiling -- and you are letting them engulf you! You’re lashing out at someone who cares very deeply for you, who only has your best interests at heart, because you’re angry -- angry at this thing inside you that has been eating away at you for so long. Rather than take responsibility for it, you’re letting it drive you to hurt the people around you. Who does that remind you of?

Will begins to cry.

WILL
Don’t you dare... Grandma, don’t you dare say it...

Marlena caresses Will.

MARLENA
Oh, my darling boy -- I don’t have to say it. I would never have to say it -- because you already know. I believe there are a great many things about yourself that you already know. I cannot stand by and watch you do something I know you will regret.

Will pulls away.

WILL
I can’t -- I can’t. I can’t do this right now.

He flees.

MARLENA
Will!

Marlena looks to Sonny, but he is only staring at the ground. Torn, Marlena decides to stay.

SONNY
(to himself, gradually faltering)
He didn’t mean it. He was angry, he felt betrayed and ambushed, and he was just lashing out. He didn’t mean it. He didn’t mean it...

As Sonny begins to weep, Marlena embraces him heartily.

MARLENA
Oh, Sonny, you’re right. He didn’t mean it. That doesn’t stop it from hurting.

EXT. SALEM PLAZA
Marlena and Sonny are embracing.

Sonny pulls back. He steadies himself and tries to rein in his tears.

SONNY
I’ll be OK. I’ll be OK.

Her eyes welling, Marlena smiles.

MARLENA
I admire you, Sonny. I truly do.

Sonny tries to smile back.

SONNY
This won’t change anything, Dr. Evans. I’m still gonna be there for Will. I’m always gonna be there for him -- no matter what.

Marlena wipes away a few tears.

MARLENA
So, you asked me, do I think you’re doing the right thing. I just want to say -- from the bottom of my heart -- yes. Yes, I believe you are doing the right thing.

After a moment, Sonny hugs Marlena again.

GABI enters the plaza.

Upon noticing Marlena and Sonny, Gabi stops. She hangs back and regards them quizzically.

INT. WILL’S APARTMENT - DAY
Will bursts into the apartment and SLAMS the door behind him. After setting his backpack on the table, he knocks a slip of paper to the floor and it slides towards the door. Will glances at it, starts to walk away, but does a double take.

He walks to pick up the paper.

IT IS A FLYER INVITATION TO SONNY’S POETRY-SLAM BENEFIT.

Already welling with tears, Will stands to examine the flyer. He turns from the door, but he can’t move. Unable to breathe, he collapses against the door and slowly sinks to the floor as he begins to cry in earnest.

WILL
(sobbing)
I’m so sorry... I’m so sorry, Sonny... I’m so sorry...

He lets the flyer fall away as he folds into his knees and loses himself in tears.
