Spoilery info from AfterElton
Aug. 17th, 2011 10:00 amI just found this in Langford on Soaps on AfterElton:
There has been a lot of talk concerning Days of Our Lives gay storyline, with many eagerly awaiting the proposed romance between Sonny Kiriakis, played by Freddie Smith, and Will Horton, played by Chandler Massey. The story was going to be penned by then head writer Dena Higley, but just as things were getting started Ms. Higley was fired, causing many wonder to what would happen to the storyline.
Ken Corday, the show's executive producer, told Soap Opera Digest that the storyline would continue, but would slow down and be told more "thoughtfully and carefully." This had gay fans fearful that the new regime would squash the storyline altogether. Then earlier this week rumors began to surface that the storyline was in flux and may not happen at all. Those rumors gained credence after Freddie Smith stated in an interview that his storyline had stalled and he had no idea if Will was going to be his love interest, or if he'd have one anytime soon.
"I am waiting for my love interest." Smith, who has been with the show for four months, said to Daytime Royalty. "I feel like Sonny's the fifth wheel right now. Everyone around him is dating and he's just kind of like the best friend who's along for the ride. I'm just waiting to see where that's going myself."
Smith admits that he's not surprised his storyline slowed down a bit with all the returns and cast changes, and he hopes things will get back moving soon. He does think that eventually his new beau is going to be Will, Chad DiMera or perhaps a new character. He adds that initially, as he was told his love interest was going to be Will, he and Chandler Massey had played several scenes foreshadowing their future romance. But now that his future boyfriend is uncertain, he just plays his scenes with Will as them being good friends.
"As an actor since I don't know where it's going to go, I personally don't want to flirt with Chad or Will, and them turn out to be straight." Smith said. "I'm waiting and playing Sonny as the cool friend. If they do tell me who it's going to be then we can start adding stuff where people will start catching on."
And yet it's entirely possible that Smith is simply playing clueless. A gag order has been implemented on the cast and crew of Days, and they are not to discuss anything that goes on at the show. So even if Smith did know who his on screen lover would be he wouldn't be allowed to say anyway.
Oddly enough, several other actors on the show have indicated that the gay storyline for Will and Sonny is in fact continuing, but that the show is just playing it very slowly like Corday told SOD. And that’s something that our sources are whispering to us as well. To be continued...
Oh, and BTW, in case you haven't seen it yet, they're serious about the gag order. As soon as the new writers took over, Galen Gering (the guy who plays Rafe) posted a picture of the sign they have hanging on the wall:

But I just don't see them going there with Chad. With Will, all the groundwork is laid.

Date: 2011-08-17 02:11 pm (UTC)With Freddie talking about a 'new character' being his love interest, it makes me think of a storyline I'd love to see: Sonny's hot European ex-boyfriend coming to town.

Date: 2011-08-17 02:13 pm (UTC)You know, when some were speculating that T might end up the gay one, what with his OTT homophobic reaction, my first thought was, "So long as Will is gay, too, I'm good with three (or more) gays in the village."

Date: 2011-08-17 02:18 pm (UTC)The idea of T being Sonny's future bf just makes me gag, though I would like more than two gay characters in town.
But seriously- Sonny is attractive, friendly, and has traveled the world. You can't tell me he didn't have a man or two along the way. ;)

Date: 2011-08-17 02:44 pm (UTC)I'm more on the fence about all of this. As far as the show itself goes, I really only care about Will (and Sami to an extent, but I'm super OTP from old times about her with Lucas, and wish he'd come back as her romantic interest), and so if Will isn't the one with the big storyline here, I'm probably not going to be interested for long. Sonny is cute and friendly, but I'm not terribly interested in him at this point.

Date: 2011-08-17 05:12 pm (UTC)Back in the old days, 20 or so years ago, when Days was at the top of the ratings, romances took time. It took over a year between when Jack and Jennifer first met and when he first admitted that he was in love with her, and another year and a half before they finally managed to get around all the obstacles that were constantly thrown in their path and get married... of course, it's a soap opera, so it didn't take too long before they found more obstacles pulling them apart. But the point is that, in getting them together in the first place, they did things in a way I would definitely describe as thoughtful and careful, unlike the insta-romances Dena Higley seemed to crank out one after another.
I mean, I don't know what's going to happen, and it could be that Ken Corday meant something entirely different from the way I'm interpreting it. But I guess I'm willing to just wait and see, and not get all upset about it now.... there's plenty of time to get upset about it later, if and when they actually do screw things up!
