NewNextNow Interview with Freddie Smith
Jul. 21st, 2011 03:37 pmPerennial Cutie Freddie Smith on Playing Gay on 90210 & Days of our Lives
Freddie Smith, a 22-year-old from Ohio, originated the roles of two positive gay TV characters: Sonny on Days of Our Lives and Marco on 90210. He chatted with NewNowNext about his work, what he’s looking forward to and what it’s like coming from a small town.
NNN: Hey Freddie! How’s your summer going?
Freddie Smith: It’s going well! It’s finally gotten nice out. Going to the beach and things like that. Relaxing and working.
So, both 90210 and Days of our Lives have pretty devoted fan bases. How has their reaction been?
I’ve been very fortunate. There are, of course, always going to be people that don’t like it. I’ve been getting great responses. I’ve been getting a really good feeling from responses on my Twitter, in magazines and online.
What kind of acting work do you like most?
I would love to do more TV movies and just find those good characters and good stories that actors can just have fun with and explore. I love stepping into other people’s shoes and live in their lives a bit, so I love playing other characters.
Are you looking to have actively looking to have a gay following?
I think it’s pretty 50-50. There have been a lot of people writing in… I’m not even sure who’s writing what. I’m getting a good response from everyone.
Has the gay community been pretty happy with your portrayal?
I think they are, yeah. I give a lot of props to the writers as well, they’re giving me great material to work with.
Your last two big roles have been playing gay characters. Do you fear being pigeonholed into that type of character?
I really don’t think so. Both characters are so different. Sonny is so complex, he’s traveled the world. He’s going to be a peacemaker in the family. My characters are both very different. I think as actors we want to try different things and explore… it’s been a great experience for both, really.
You’re from Ashtabula, Ohio originally. That’s a funny name. What’s it like there?
It was completely different than LA., a very small town. Coming from a small town and moving here was a huge change. Once you’re in LA and working the biz, the world’s getting smaller and smaller every day. It became a smaller world than I imagined when I first moved here.
Who has been your favorite role to play?
Sonny. He’s a very upbeat person. He’s always on. No matter what the situation, he just handles it positively. I just come to work and have a great time. He’s definitely my favorite character to play, so far.
Do you have anything coming up this summer or fall?
Right now I’ve been so jam-packed with Days. I’m so happy to have lots of work. As of now it’s a lot of Days of Our Lives coming up.
