And I really thought they did a great job with the scene between Maggie and Sonny's parents. What a good thing for middle America to see on a soap in the middle of the day!

Victor's okay with it, don't worry! he doesn't beat around the bush, so if he had a problem with it he would have told Sonny so instead of talking about how he was worried for him about the prejudice he's bound to face.

I really loved this episode! I loved Sonny's conversation with Victor -- I fall more and more in love with this boy every time I see him!

I also loved the whole scene between Maggie and Justin & Adrienne, especially:

Justin: You know, when he first came to us with such a serious look on his face and said he had something to tell us...
Adrienne: We were like, "Oh my God! He's on drugs, or he's gotten a girl pregnant."
Justin: And then he said he was gay.
Adrienne: And we were like, "That's it? That's all?"
Justin: But then it hits you. That your son is different from you in a way that you just didn't plan on.
Adrienne: Yeah. I started watching what I said around him all the time.
Justin: And you wonder if maybe there was something that we did as parents.
Adrienne: It got really uncomfortable.
Justin: So we went to a support group.
Adrienne: His idea.
Justin: And it helped.

And especially especially:

Justin: He says he's always known.
Adrienne: He reminded me of these curtains that I got for his room when he was just a little kid. They had this Western theme, you know, cactus, buffalo roaming, like that. Part of the pattern was these two cowboys walking together. And Sonny said that, when he was about five or six years old, he would look up at those two cowboys and say, "They're like me."
Maggie: Oh, my.
Justin: Rejecting your son for being gay would be like rejecting him for having brown eyes.


I just think it's one of the most sensitive and authentic descriptions of how parents dealt with their son coming out that I've ever seen on a TV show.

I totally agree with everything you said! I am so excited to have a gay character come on scene who is not only confident and proud of who he is from the beginning, but who is surrounded by supportive family as well! I am so hopeful for this storyline!

I'm very hopeful for the storyline, too! I have to say, I was particularly impressed that they made a point about how, even though Justin and Adrienne were totally accepting and supportive right from the moment he told them he was gay, they still found themselves having a hard time dealing with it and not knowing how to talk to him, etc. I just found it very believable and authentic that even the most loving parents in the world might need to join a support group and talk to other parents in the same situation before they were fully able to handle it.

ITA! Especially the curtains part. That really floored me. The thought of a little boy thinking, "They're like me!" brought tears to my eyes. Well done, Days of Our Lives. Well done. I'm honestly amazed by how wonderful that was.

I LOVED the cowboy thing! The story touched me, and I just really loved how the show made a point of saying so clearly that being gay isn't something that just happens at puberty or whatever, that a five year old can already know he's gay.

But I think the part that impressed me the most was Justin and Adrienne saying that their initial reaction was "That's it?" That is was initially just not a big deal to them at all. But then later they found themselves watching everything they said and that they ended up going to a support group. I just thought the whole idea that, no matter how tolerant and accepting and loving they were, there would still be a part of them that just didn't know how to deal with it until they talked to other parents of gay children, seemed very authentic.

I found it much more believable and handled much better than Holden pushing Luke's "relationship" with Jade because it was "proof" that Luke wasn't gay, then turning on a dime in an instant once Luke admitted he was gay and being all "I love you no matter what." And I don't think I even need to say anything about how much better Justin and Adrienne are than Lily was when she found out!

I LOVED the conversation between the parents and Maggie(?). Loved that PFLAG got a mention from both Sonny and his parents, and that they said he's been gay all his life (and OMG, the curtain story is the cutest thing EVAH!)

The conversation between Sonny and Victor was awesome as well.

I'm agreeing with others who are glad that Sonny is already an out and proud gay man with a loving support system in his family. I have a feeling the big, dramatic coming out story is still to come (*cough* Will *cough*). It's also one we've seen a few times before so it's nice to see the opposite side of things. That coming out doesn't have to be heart wrenching for all involved.

And that curtain story? Suddenly it got very dusty in here. That must be why my eyes are so wet. And I'm suddenly picturing Sonny having some sort of religious experience his first time watching Brokeback Mountain.

You guys, I'm so impressed with the show in regards to this storyline so far! As everyone has said, Adrienne and Justin's convo with Maggie was pitch perfect (seriously, the cowboys curtains = genius), and Victor got to voice some of the concerns that you know certain audience members have, and I think it was good that he wasn't an awful homophobe, but also wasn't rolling out the rainbow flag. There will be a progression there, I'm sure.

I'm guessing the Hortons are going to struggle with Will's gayness a bit more, and they'll compare and contrast reactions between families. I'm so looking forward to how it all unfolds!

Totally agree with your points re Sonny's family and your guess that the Horton's will react differently. I want to see it all continue to be handled sensitively but yes, this is a soap and they need the drama so...........
My money is on Sami and Chad being difficult with Rafe and Grandma being understanding, Kinsey titillated, Gabs (who cares) and T acting all cool

I think Will will definitely have to deal with some of his family struggling with him being gay. I'm not sure if it will come from the Horton or the Brady side of his family (or maybe some of both), but I can't imagine they'll make it easy for him. I mean, I think they only reason they made it easy for Sonny was because it happened off-screen, but Will's story will be happening on screen, and everyone being all, "okay, that's great, we love you no matter what" just doesn't make for good drama.

I'm not sure how Sami will take it. I mean, she's very big on drama, so I could see her trying to fight him on it, but OTOH, after everything she's done in her life, she should get on her knees and thank whatever god she believes in that being gay is Will's biggest "problem". I could definitely see Grandpa Roman having a hard time with it... but that's mainly because I have just never liked Roman, not an actual prediction that he will have a hard time!

I think it would be kind of awesome if at least one person in Will's family, when finding out he's with Sonny, got really, really upset about it, but it turned out the problem wasn't Will being gay but rather "OMG, how could you date a Kiriakis!" :D

I have a feeling Caroline is not going to take it well, given they set up her connection to Gabi recently. I do think Sami will come through and be fine after the shock, and I would love it if someone was only upset because of the Kiriakis thing. Hee.

I'm guessing Chad won't take it well, and that will cause friction between him and Abigail, who is obviously down with the gay.

In regards to anyone having an issue with Sonny being gay, I actually think that the only person that'll show any problem with it might be Will out of his own insecurities.

As for Will, well he's a Horton... that's a gateway to drama right there.

I like how they are writing Sonny and his parents.. much better work than I expected.
