In this episode, Will and Sonny discuss the aftermath of their kiss. Sonny tries to reassure Will that he's there for him... (Brownie points if anyone sees the book I allude to with this episode!)

INT. SONNY’S CAFE - DAY
The cafe bustles with patrons as WILL enters. He spots SONNY at the counter, his back turned. When Sonny turns around, he sees Will. Sonny gives him a gentle smile.

Taking a deep breath, Will heads for the counter.

SONNY
(casually)
Hey.

WILL
Hey.

Will takes a moment before sitting at the counter.

SONNY
So, your usual, today?

WILL
Uh, yeah! Yeah, thanks.

Sonny produces a mug and pours Will a cup of coffee.

SONNY
There you go, sir.

Will forces a laugh.

WILL
Sonny, listen. I, I wanted to apologize for -- you know...

SONNY
(holding up a hand)
No need. Don’t be sorry -- you have nothing to apologize for.

WILL
Really? I don’t? You seemed pretty freaked out. You couldn’t get out of here fast enough after --

Stopping himself, Will looks around before leaning in.

WILL (CONT’D)
After I kissed you.

INT. SONNY’S CAFE
Sonny nods.

SONNY
I know. I know.

WILL
You’ve pretty much been MIA, too.

SONNY
I know.

Will scoffs.

WILL
You don’t have to try to spare my feelings. I was out of line, and --

SONNY
No, you weren’t. Look, it’s taken me a while to -- to really be sure of what I want to say.

WILL
Sonny --

SONNY
Let’s not talk about this now. This probably isn’t the best time -- or place. Can you meet me tonight at the square?

Will hesitates.

SONNY (CONT’D)
Please?

WILL
(reluctantly)
OK.

SONNY
Right after we close, I’ll be there -- first thing.

WILL
OK.

Standing, Will takes a bill of money from his wallet and sets it on the counter.

WILL (CONT’D)
For the coffee. I’ll see you tonight.

As Will leaves, Sonny regards the bill with disappointment.

EXT. HORTON SQUARE - NIGHT
Will sits at a bench. Deep in thought, he alternates between moments of calm and agitation.

Sonny enters the square.

SONNY
Hey.

Seeing Sonny, Will stands.

WILL
Hey.

Sonny grins as he holds up a bill of money.

SONNY
You left this at the cafe this morning. I think it belongs to you.

He holds the bill out to Will, who laughs before hesitantly taking the money.

WILL
You know, businesses usually don’t refuse money for their services.

SONNY
(shrugging)
Yeah, well, I guess money’s not the most important thing to me right now.

Will swallows.

WILL
I’m sure that would absolutely thrill Ian.

SONNY
Ian’s got another thing coming.

Sonny indicates the bench.

SONNY (CONT’D)
Let’s sit.

Will and Sonny sit on the bench.

WILL
So is this the part where you try to let me down easy?

SONNY
(shaking his head)
It’s not. When you kissed me, it was a big deal for me. A really big deal for me.

WILL
I’m sorry.

SONNY
Don’t be. We were both really amped up on emotion, but I was the one that didn’t take it that well at all. I really wish I hadn’t run out on you, and it’s taken me a while to overcome the shame of abandoning you like that.

WILL
It’s OK. Really.

SONNY
I appreciate you saying that, but it’s not OK. Not by a long shot.

Will stands.

WILL
No, it really is. I get it -- you don’t like me in that way. I get it. It’s fine.

Sonny stands.

SONNY
Will, no -- it’s not that at all.

He leads Will back to the bench.

SONNY (CONT’D)
Come on. Let me tell you a story.

They sit.

SONNY (CONT’D)
When I was in Italy, I learned a lot about something that I wasn’t expecting to learn about: race-car driving.

WILL
Race-car driving.

SONNY
Yeah. It’s huge over there. And unlike here, when a race is set to go on, they will race barring the most catastrophic disaster. Come rain or shine, they’ll race.

WILL
They’ll race in the rain? How?

SONNY
Well, they’ve got special equipment and stuff like that for it, but only the top-notch drivers who are really good at it will do it. They’ve got a saying: “La macchina va dove vanno gli occhi -- the car goes where the eyes go.”

WILL
Huh.

SONNY
I didn’t really understand it until I saw my first rain race. The drivers who will race in the rain are in a league above the rest. They’re the ones who are always in control -- never reacting -- but anticipating and taking the initiative.

WILL
Yeah?

SONNY
Their eyes are always looking towards the next turn. They’re always making something happen as opposed to waiting for things to happen. The car, the track, the terrain -- the weather -- they’re not separate entities. Rather, for the best drivers, they’re all extensions of the driver’s body.

Sonny and Will gaze at each other for a moment.

SONNY (CONT’D)
I guess what I’m trying to say is this: my eyes are on you, Will. Whatever you might think, my eyes are on you.

EXT. HORTON SQUARE
Will grins.

WILL
So, if I have you right, here -- you’re in a race. . .and since your eyes are on me, you’re going to run me over with a race car?

Sonny bursts out laughing and smacks Will’s arm.

SONNY
No! Smart ass! OK, so maybe that wasn’t as romantic as I’d thought it’d be. Let me elaborate: the best drivers are always in control, but the thing they really can’t control is the other driver -- other drivers.

WILL
Yeah, I get that.

SONNY
Right? So when you’re on a new track for the first time, you take it solo without having to worry about other drivers. That’s the way it should be right now -- for you. This should be all about you, not me. You should be in total control right now without having to worry about anyone else.

Will takes a moment. His emotions begin to stir.

WILL
I don’t wanna do this on my own. I don’t think I can.

SONNY
That’s not what I meant. You’re not alone. Far from it.

WILL
I’m scared.

SONNY
I know. This is scary. This is huge. But you know, winning is great and losing sucks, but there’s no shame in losing a race. The only shame would be in skipping it entirely because you might lose.

WILL
I want you to help me, Sonny.

SONNY
And I am. I will. I’ll be part of your pit crew, rooting you on through every single lap.

Will turns away.

SONNY (CONT’D)
You may want me in the race with you, either in the car with you or in a car to lead you, but trust me, I’ll be doing you a disservice if I do that. I’ll just slow you down -- or we might crash and burn.

WILL
(sniffling)
Does it have to be a race?

SONNY
No, it doesn’t. But whatever you want to make it, it has to be about you. It has to come from within. You have to be the one in control.

Will stands. Sonny follows him.

SONNY (CONT’D)
I’ve got your back, Will. I’m looking out for you. What you want from me, if we do this, it’s not gonna be about just you anymore. It’s gonna be about us. And with this storm going on, you don’t need this on you as well.

Will faces Sonny.

WILL
Can you spare me the metaphors, OK? Just cut to the chase: do you -- do you feel anything for me at all?

EXT. HORTON SQUARE
Sonny gazes at Will.

SONNY
I do. I do feel something for you.

WILL
(agitated)
So what does it matter, then? If I feel something for you and you feel something for me, what’s the problem?

Sonny sighs. Will walks a few steps away.

SONNY
I didn’t want to have to say this, but you’re not ready. You have your needs. You have things you have to take care of, things that shouldn’t involve anyone else. But I have my own needs, too. I need things from you that you’re not ready to give.

Will turns to Sonny, tears welling.

WILL
Like what, huh? You want me to say it? I’ll say it: I’m gay. I’m gay, all right? Are you happy? What more do you want from me?

EXT. HORTON SQUARE
Sonny steps towards Will.

SONNY
I want you to be proud of yourself, Will. I want you to be comfortable in your own skin, to love yourself the way that. . .that you deserve. I don’t want to hide. When I’m with you -- if we’re together, like that -- I want to be able to hold your hand, to walk with you arm-in-arm.

Sonny spins around.

SONNY (CONT’D)
I wanna be able to shout it to world: this is Will, and he’s mine! I wanna proclaim -- we’re together -- just like everyone else!

He turns to Will.

SONNY (CONT’D)
Would you be able to do that for me? Right now, could you do that for me?

EXT. HORTON SQUARE
Will wipes away a few tears.

WILL
You’re. . .you’re right. I’m not ready.

He forces a smile. Sonny approaches him.

SONNY
I’m your friend. I’m always gonna be your friend. I’m gonna be here for you through this, don’t worry. But, like I said, this has gotta be all about you right now.

WILL
(nodding)
Yeah. You’re right.

SONNY
And, like I said, I’ve got my eyes on you. I’m gonna wait for you -- no matter how long it takes. I’m gonna be there to wave that checkered flag as you cross the finish line.

Will grasps Sonny’s shoulders, smiling.

WILL
You know what? I’ve got my eyes on you, too. Let it rain -- I’m not gonna let anything stop me.

Sonny smiles back.
