Will apologizes to Marlena and Sonny. This concludes the 7-episode arc I envisioned that gives Sonny a pivotal role in Will's coming out. I have been so moved by Will's story so far; it hits close to home, and this was a way for me to really celebrate what Days is doing with his story--and, I hope, Sonny's as well. Your thoughts? Comments? Critiques?

EXT. SONNY’S CAFE - DAY
WILL lingers outside the facade of Sonny’s coffee shop. Through the window, he sees SONNY behind the counter.

Taking a deep breath, he moves towards the entrance -- only to stop. Sighing, he shakes his head and turns to leave.

INT. MARLENA’S HOME - DAY
A halfhearted KNOCK disrupts the quiet. MARLENA enters and crosses the living room to answer the door.

It is Will.

MARLENA
(beaming)
Oh, Will, I’m so happy to see you.

Will attempts a smile.

WILL
It’s not too late, is it? Is now a good time?

MARLENA
Of course it’s a good time! For you, now is always a good time.

Marlena invites Will in and he enters. His hands in his pockets, Will brims with guilt.

WILL
I’m sorry. I’m so sorry. I really messed up big time, didn’t I?

INT. MARLENA’S HOME
Will and Marlena are sitting on the couch.

WILL
I keep going over there -- but I just can’t bring myself to go in.

MARLENA
What stops you?

Will thinks.

WILL
I guess. . .I’m just afraid. And ashamed. I keep replaying that moment over and over in my head, and I just can’t believe I said all those things!

MARLENA
Well, sweetheart, as time passes, our mind tends to make our memories more potent. We sometimes make certain things more severe than they actually were.

WILL
But you were there! I was pretty disgusting towards Sonny. Even you have to admit that.

MARLENA
Oh, no, I disagree. You weren’t disgusting. You were angry and upset, but not disgusting.

Will hangs his head for a moment.

WILL
You stayed with Sonny, right? How... How was he?

Marlena hesitates.

MARLENA
He -- was trying very hard to stay strong. To see things from your perspective.

WILL
(swallowing)
How badly did I hurt him? Did he -- did he. . .cry?

When Marlena hesitates again, Will crumbles.

WILL (CONT’D)
Oh, God... He’s never going to forgive me...

INT. MARLENA’S HOME
Marlena caresses Will.

MARLENA
Sweetheart -- I think you might be underestimating the depth of Sonny’s compassion -- and his forgiveness.

Will shakes his head.

WILL
Even if he does forgive me, I don’t think I could ever forgive myself.

MARLENA
Oh, Will -- oh, honey, don’t say that. Don’t be harder on yourself than you need to be. Just go to Sonny. I firmly believe that he will be just as happy to see you -- as I always am to see you.

WILL
Believe me, I want to. It’s just -- he’s been trying so hard to do things right, while -- me -- I just keep finding ways to screw things up.

Marlena takes Will’s hand.

MARLENA
Don’t worry about doing things right. Just worry about being honest -- honest with Sonny, and yourself. From there, things will fall into place.

INT. MARLENA’S HOME
Will nods.

WILL
There’s this one thing that keeps sticking out for me, one thing Sonny said. He talked about, betraying me -- having betrayed me. Do you know what he meant by that?

MARLENA
I think I do. I could see this clearly from him as we talked -- not just by the things he said, but by the things he didn’t say. I think Sonny is like me in that he considers your privacy to be -- paramount. He had a strong sense of what you’re going through, and so he was trying very hard to keep to himself, but as you know, secrets sometimes have a way of becoming a great burden.

Will exhales.

WILL
Has it become a burden for you?

MARLENA
(shaking her head)
No. No, it hasn’t.

WILL
Why -- why not?

MARLENA
Because I know you, my darling boy. You are so strong, and your heart is so pure. I know that, with time, you will always find your way. You will always do what’s right.

Will smiles.

WILL
I hope so. I really hope so.

INT. MARLENA’S HOME
Marlena rubs Will’s arm.

MARLENA
Oh, I’m not worried. If there’s one last thing I could share with you, it’s about budding relationships.

Will laughs.

MARLENA (CONT’D)
(holding up her hands)
I know, I know. But, if I could just speak hypothetically: When we have relationships with people, whether they be acquaintances or friends or otherwise, we automatically establish boundaries within those relationships. The closer we become with someone, the more those boundaries start to fall away. Sometimes, those boundaries fall faster for one, but not the other.

WILL
So, that’s why it’s so easy to -- hurt the people we’re closest to.

MARLENA
Well, yes, that’s true -- but I was going to say, the less boundaries there are, the easier it is for us to make those we care about feel happy -- to make them feel absolutely wonderful.

Will takes a moment to absorb Marlena’s advice.

INT. SONNY’S CAFE - NIGHT
Sonny is wiping down mugs behind the counter, his back to the entrance. The door opens.

SONNY
Sorry, we’re --

He turns around to see Will enter.

SONNY (CONT’D)
-- closed...

INT. SONNY’S CAFE
Will smiles at Sonny. Sonny smiles back.

SONNY
Gosh, look at you. You are a caffeine addict! And look at me, just enabling you like that.

Will laughs.

WILL
Yeah, yeah! I’ve gotta get my fix, you know.

He approaches the counter gingerly, glancing around.

WILL (CONT’D)
Anything I can help you with? Wash up, wipe down? I’ve got lots of experience with that kind of thing.

SONNY
(looking around, thinking)
Well... I don’t think so. I’ve pretty much done everything. I was actually just about to lock up.

Will takes a deep breath.

WILL
Oh, OK. Well, I -- needed to talk to you. I wanted... I wanted to apologize for all those things I said that day, back at the plaza. I was really, really out of line, and you didn’t deserve any of that.

Sonny sets down his rag.

SONNY
I appreciate you coming here, but, I do not accept your apology.

INT. SONNY’S CAFE
Will clears his throat.

WILL
I -- I was prepared for that. I wasn’t expecting you to forgive me right off the bat, so. . .what can I do? How can I make things up to you?

Sonny puts his hands together and wiggles his fingers like he’s contemplating an evil plot.

SONNY
Hmm... How about this? You let me hang onto your jeans for a little while longer, and we’ll call it even.

Will is speechless. A brief laugh escapes him.

WILL
You’re -- you’re joking around with me?

Sonny grins at him, and Will laughs.

WILL (CONT’D)
I have to say -- for all your business savvy, you’re a pretty lousy negotiator.

Sonny laughs.

SONNY
Will, come on. Of course I forgive you. You came here, you apologized. We’re good.

WILL
This isn’t like I just, forgot to give you a ride or something, though. I was really awful to you, and I really, really hurt you. I made you cry! That was a despicable thing for me to do. You can’t possibly forgive me like that right away.

INT. SONNY’S CAFE
Sonny leans against the counter.

SONNY
I was really hoping I’d get some of that confidentiality treatment, too.

WILL
No, it wasn’t like that. I filled in the blanks, and you know, I wanted to know. That’s the only way I can truly apologize to you. If I didn’t know what I did or how badly I hurt you, any apology from me would just be empty.

Sonny gazes at Will.

SONNY
It wasn’t empty. Nothing you do for me is ever empty.

WILL
I’m glad to hear you say that, but if we’re going to keep doing this, we can’t keep things like that from each other. No matter what, we’ve gotta be honest.

SONNY
I agree.

Will rests against the counter.

WILL
You know, I understand why you went to my grandmother. You knew what I was going through, and you respected me enough to honor my privacy. At the same time, I was pressuring you -- and you felt trapped. You wanted to talk to someone, someone you knew who would also respect my privacy. I should’ve seen that then.

He scoffs to himself.

WILL (CONT’D)
You were trying so hard not to pressure me into anything. And then I go and do that very thing to you.

SONNY
(smiling)
Well, you see it now. I can’t really blame you, either. I am pretty dashing.

Will laughs heartily.

WILL
Yeah -- yeah, you are.

He and Sonny enjoy the moment.

WILL (CONT’D)
You’re an impossibly good friend, way more than I deserve.

SONNY
Don’t sell yourself short. You deserve a lot more than you think.

Will smiles.

WILL
The other thing I get now is that you were trying to set up boundaries to protect, not just you, but me, too.

He grins.

WILL (CONT’D)
If I could try my hand at a metaphor -- I wasn’t really in control. I wasn’t handling myself the way I should’ve been, and so I was just flailing about indiscriminately, like a tornado... And I almost flattened you.

Sonny laughs gently.

SONNY
I like it. I think it’s an apt metaphor.

Will hangs his head.

WILL
The rain is tougher than I thought. I’m still not used to the track yet.

SONNY
You know, the thing about champions is this: champions don’t always win; rather, champions never stop racing.

Will looks up at Sonny.

INT. SONNY’S CAFE
Will grins at Sonny.

WILL
I think you’re right. You’re absolutely right. You always were. This isn’t to say that I care about you less or that my feelings for you have changed, but I think we should continue being friends -- just friends, for now.

SONNY
No explanation necessary. I know where you’re coming from, and I’ll always be here.

Will gazes at him.

WILL
I’m gonna get there, you know. I’m gonna become the one you deserve, the one whose hand you’ll be proud to hold.

SONNY
You’re closer than you think, Will. I think you’re at the summit already. It’s just a matter of standing up tall, looking out, and enjoying the view. When that moment comes, you’re going to be so happy -- happy like you’ve never been before in your life. I can hardly wait for you to experience that, because when that moment does come, your life is gonna change -- for the better.

Tears well in Will’s eyes.

WILL
When that moment does come, I’m gonna share it with you.

HE REACHES ACROSS THE COUNTER TO TAKE SONNY’S HAND.

WILL (CONT’D)
I promise.

SONNY GRASPS WILL’S HAND IN RETURN.
